The Gambling Continuum

Gambling behavior takes place along a “continuum” from no gambling to severe problem gambling. This can result in major problems to the individual, their family and others relying on them. Those that do gamble can move in and out of problematic gambling periods throughout their gambling life.

Signs of Problem Gambling

Problem gambling can take on many forms; have different courses, and varying levels of severity. For some gambling may not be causing financial problems however it may be the basis of relationship problems. For others they may not spend a lot of time gambling or gamble a lot of money but they may not be able to afford any gambling losses. The following signs may indicate a problem that would benefit from getting information or help.

When people gamble as a way of dealing with difficulties in their lives, their risk for developing a gambling problem increases. There are strong links between problem gambling and depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, heavy alcohol and drug use, poor physical and emotional health, and violence. Oftentimes one or more of these issues accompanies a gambling disorder.

Problem Gambling Impacts

When people gamble as a way of dealing with difficulties in their lives their risk for developing a gambling problem increases. We know that Problem gambling doesn’t affect only the problem gambler, when Oregonians were asked if someone else gambling problem affected them 6% said yes. Viewed from an economic standpoint we are all impacted by problem gambling due to the increased burden problem gamblers place on public services such as health care, social programs, and costs related to crime.
